. They exhibit a peculiar upright sitting posture which is rather distinctive. This is well illustrated by BugGuide photo #455847 from Fairfax County taken in September. This species is found mostly in mid to late summer, museum specimens are from 30 June and 18 July.

. Common and widespread in early spring into early summer. Perches head down on tree trunks.

. In Virginia, a high elevation species. One specimen at the NMNH from Locust Springs, Highland County from 1 July 1982.

. There is one specimen of this tiny species at the NMNH from Chain Bridge, VA from April 20, 1924. There is also a photo on BugGuide (#176064) from Norfolk taken on 5 April, so it appears to be found in the early spring.

. There is one specimen of this "Water Snipe Fly" at the NMNH from Burkes Garden in Tazewell County.
