Robust, stemless succulent perennial, solitary or in small groups, non-suckering. Leaves in a dense rosette, often erect and somewhat incurved, up to 60 cm long, grey-green when fresh, purple-bronze under dry conditions, with scattered prickles on whitish tubercles, mainly on the undersurface of the leaves. Inflorescence erect, up to 1.25 m, simple or 1-3-branched in older specimens. Flowers in densely flowered tall, cylindric racemes, bright red to greenish-yellow.
