It is known from Pune (Silas 1952, Tonapi and Mulherkar 1963, Kharat et al. 2000, 2003, Wagh and Ghate 2003, Chandanshive et al. 2007), Washim (Heda 2009), Solapur (Jadhav and Yadav 2009) and Satara (Arunachalam et al. 2002) from Maharashtra. In Karnataka it is known from Tungabhadra river (Shshnawaz and Venkateshwarlu 2009, Shshnawaz et al. 2010). It is also suggested to be occuring in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh (Talwar and Jhingran 1991).
Osteobrama cotio and Osteobrama cotio cunma recorded from Krishna and Godavari river system by several authors are likely to be Osteobrama cotio peninsularis (David 1963).
Record of this species from Kerala (Thomas et al. 2002) needs conformation.
It is difficult to exactly map the exact distribution or inferred range for this species as it is either recorded only up to the species level or misidentified as O. c. cunma.
