Range Description

This species ranges from Sierra Leone in the relatively narrow band of forest-savannah transition through West Africa to Sudan, and Yemen. The range also covers most of East Africa to the tropical parts of southern Africa, where the habitat is less specialized. There is a distinct subspecies on Madagascar. Overall, this virtual pan-sub-saharan African distribution gives a very large EOO of around 20 million km2. As the butterfly is widespread across this EOO, the area of occupancy is also likely to be large. The altitudinal distribution is wide, based on records from Tanzania, as it occurs at altitudes from sea-level to 2,200 m (Kielland 1990).
