In Dutch, smelt has the nickname cucumber fish, thanks to the odor it emits. This fish swims in both brackish and salt water. There are two forms: 'marine smelt' and 'inland smelt. The 'marine'smelt' grows up in salt water and migrates to fresh water to spawn. You find this fish in both the sea as well as fresh water which is connected to the sea. 'Inland smelt' spends its entire life in fresh or brackish water, particularly in inland lakes.
