Description of Symphyacanthida

Acantharea distinguished because the bases of the spicules do not break apart in sulphuric acid but are tightly fused into a tiny sphere; cell round or oblong; endoplasm with inner dense layer containing nuclei, brown, yellow or reddish pigments and an outer layer with cytoplasmic strands and axopodial axonemes; capsule wall a thin meshwork; ectoplasm transparent; periplasmic cortex obvious being an elastic lattice with numerous pores through which axopodia arise; myonemes flat; gametogenesis in a gamontocyst.
