Description of Colpodella pugnax

Cells are 12 - 15 microns long. In swimming cells the cell body is more or less elliptical but with a prominent curved anterior rostrum. The heterodynamic flagella are 1 – 1.5 times the length of the cell, they insert at the base of the rostrum and are almost directly opposed. They insert in separate tiny flagellar depressions or grooves. The cells swim rapidly and rotate while they move. The cells do not glide nor show plasticity. There is no prominent gutter or groove on the cell body. Predatory.
