Overview

Comprehensive Description

Amphiblestrum flemingii is an encrusting bryozoan, common to the northeast Atlantic. The colonies form extensive sheets on various substrates including stones, kelp holdfasts, and most frequently on dead or living bivalve shells, e.g. horse mussels (Modiolus), scallops of the genus Pecten and Chlamys, and Anomia shells. Amphiblestrum flemingii also frequently colonises the large subtidal bryozoan Pentapora foliacea, where it may occur in abundance.

The species ranges from the lower shore into the shallow subtidal waters in the cool temperate and boreal zone. It is widespread throughout the northeast Atlantic and ranges from Spitzbergen and Norway, south to the northwest coast of Spain and east to Skaggerak.

Diagnostic Description
