Duck leeches are common in the Dutch coastal region, thanks to the many waterfowl. This species is otherwise not found in the sea. It crawls into the nostrils, mouth and respiratory tracks of waterfowl and can cause much misery. The birds can suffer from suffocation and the leech can transfer diseases. Duck leeches can even cause death in young chicks.
