Range DescriptionThere are extensive records of the species from much of central, southwestern, southern and eastern China. Needham (1930) recorded S. baccha from Fujian, central and southeastern China, Sui and Sun (1984) from Fujian, Sichuan and Zhejiang and Hua (2000) recorded the nominate subspecies from Fujian, Guizhou, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and Zhejiang and the subspecies Sympetrum baccha matutinum from Henan. Wilson (2005) recorded S. b. baccha from Huapin, Guangxi and Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (2003) from Nanling, Guangdong. Lieftinck et al. (1984) remark that it is distributed in the plains and hills all over Taiwan island up to 500 m. S. b. matutinum has been recorded from all the main islands of Japan, Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, Shikoku and many other offshore islands (Sugimura et al. 2001). Though not common S. b. matutinum has also been recorded from Korea (Lee 2001).
