Triglochin nana (dwarf arrowgrass) going to seed on Mt. Direction, Hobart, Tasmania. Whole plant about 3cm tall. The very characteristic fruits are what give these plants there common name.

Developing fruits of Arrowgrass, Triglochin maritima. Based on their longer and narrower fruits, plants in our area were for a long time recognized as var. elata. Most of the fruits as shown here appear to be only marginally oblong-ovoid, or ovoid although they are still in an early part of their development and perhaps elongate somewhat in age.July 14, 2012, Millcreek Township, Salt Lake County, Utah, approx. 4300 ft. elev.

Sheathing, erect leaves (up to about as half as long as its full height) of Triglochin maritima.Some of the other native plants in this picture include the little yellow flowering buttercup, Ranunculus cymbalaria (Halerpestes cymbalaria) at the far right/bottom, and young ragweeds Ambrosia artemisiifolia (at far left).Also, the tall true grass with the long whispy awns is Foxtail barley, Hordeum jubatum subsp. jubatum. Taxonomists seem to be in wide agreement that this is a native species to the western United States (there are two subspecies, both native) but that is behaves like a weed since they occupy a wide variety of habitats with extremely elevation ranges and will occupy disturbed habitats and roadsides. Introduced/weed: the clover that also is in flower is Trifolium fragiferum and not what we had hoped it would be. July 14, 2012, Millcreek Township, Salt Lake County, Utah, approx. 4300 ft. elev.

Marshy and fairly densely vegetated habitat of Triglochin maritima L. which has many common names including Arrowgrass, Arrow grass, Marine arrowgrass, Troscart maritime and Shore arrowgrass. Our plants have in the past been treated as var. elata (see other pictures re: fruit shape) however currently most sources are treating this circumboreal plant as a species without varieties. Arrowgrass is in its own separate family and is not technically a part of the Grass (Poaceae ) family.
