The two recognized subspecies of Neocicada hieroglyphica, N. hieroglyphica hieroglyphica and N. hieroglyphica johannis, inhabit the eastern United States, where they are associated with oaks (Quercus spp.).  Neocicada hieroglyphica hieroglyphica is known from Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia (U.S.A.). Neocicada hieroglyphica johannis is reported from just a small portion of this range in the southeastern United States (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina).
