Very small to large (1.2-12 mm, usually 4-7 mm) yellow, brown or black flies. Medial part of facial plate (postfrons) less sclerotized than lateral parts, oral vibrissae present, postocellar setae convergent, crossing, sometimes reduced; one to three pairs of fronto-orbitals, which never strongly incurved; pedicel without antennal seam, first flagellomere without basal process projecting into pedicel; wings with costal break near confointment of subcosta with costa, costa with spines in several groups; second basal cell and anal cell closed, alula well-developed.
