Description of Cyclidium muscicola

Elongate ellipsoid predatory ciliate, 120-140 microns long, width about 27 microns, in contracted state, posterior half distended and anterior end laterally flattened. Macronucleus appears as twisted ribbon, in middle of ciliate. Probably 3-4 micronucleus present. Contractile vacuole terminal. 18-20 kineties run along body. Basal bodies, at 3 microns intervals in each kinety, each bearing 12 microns cilium. Dorsal brush of 3 rows of paired kinetosomes- 12 kinetosome pairs in left row, l4 in middle row, and 8 in right row. 5 microns bristle inserted at each kinetosome of dorsal brush. Kineties do not end at peristomal flange, but bend to left and run parallel to it for short distance. Flange surrounds slit-like C and bears circlet of sturdy trichocyst. Elongate spindle-shaped extrusomes scattered throughout pellicle. Oval protrichocyst arranged in bands between kineties. Numerous food vacuoles throughout the cell body appearing dark against light background of colourless cytoplasm.
