Small to very small flies, 1-3 mm long. R2+3 usually extremely shortened and ending in C with or a little beyond R1, except in Leiomyza Macquart; ultimate section of M1 forming a long anteriorly concave arc. (Sabrosky 1987, Papp 1998)
