Range Description

The species is a widely distributed in the Balkans and Carpathians with several sub-species and varieties (IPNI 2013). It is extremely variable and there is no possibility of geographically delimiting itsmorphotypes (Letz 2009). Populations often consist of relatively compact clones that have some geographical isolationwhich limits gene flow between them and favours speciation (Barca and Niculae 2006). Most authors consider it to be endemic to the Balkan peninsula although some include populations from central Italy under this name (Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh 1998).
