Flies ranging from 3 to 15 mm body length, usually rather slender, especially in larger species. Color ranging from yellowish through various combinations of that color, brown, and black to wholly black, with some parts such as femora and abdomen bright metallic blue. Wings usually with brown spots or bands. Some species strongly sexually dimorphic. (Steyskal 1987)
