General Description
Mouthparts pierces through hippo hides: African biting flies
Source and Additional Information
The mouthparts of African biting flies can pierce tough hippopotamus hides due to their ultra-strong, needle-like structure.
"Tabanids (horseflies and deerflies) have large heads, large eyes, and especially large and sharp piercing mouthparts – in some African species, strong enough to pierce through tough hippopotamus hide." (Crump 2005:71)
