Description of Ceratium arietinum

Cells contain numerous yellow-brown chloroplasts. Dorso-ventrally flattened, Ceratium tripos-like cells, but more "delicate". Epitheca with straight anterior horn, offset to the left side. The hypotheca is rounded at the posterior end, extending directly into two antapical, narrowing, closed horns. They are directed anteriorly. The right horn could curve about 180°, pointing to the left side. The thecal plates are ornamented. Plates in the central area on the ventral side are very delicate. The nucleus is situated in the epicone.
