Description of Gloeomonas

Cells ellipsoidal, ovoid, cylindrical or spherical; cell wall relatively thick often with additional gelatinous sheath; papilla usually inconspicuous, rarely prominent, sometimes absent; 2 equal flagella; chloroplast either massive, cup-shaped, solid or perforated, or (mostly) consisting of several closely-spaced, lens-shaped pieces; pyrenoids absent; eyespot mostly present; two contractile vacuoles present; nucleus central; asexual reproduction by zoospores, sexual reproduction anisogamous (known in only one species); palmelloid stages present.
