Bacteria degrade petroleum hydrocarbons: Marinobacter

Blooms of obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (OHCB) result in the rapid degradation of many oil constituents.

Marinobacter is a genus of Proteobacteria found in sea water. A number of strains and species can degrade hydrocarbons.[2] The species involved in hydrocarbon degradation include M. alkaliphilus, M. aquaeolei, M. arcticus, M. hydrocarbonoclasticus, M. maritimus & M. squalenivorans.[3]
