Opisthopterus equatorialis Hildebrand, 1946

Equatorial longfin-herring,     Razor longfin-herring

Elongate, strongly compressed; forehead concave eye moderate; mouth opens obliquely up; forehead horizontal; lower jaw projecting at front, short (ends under eye); a distinct space between 2 bones of top jaw; jaw teeth small; 21-25 lower gill rakers; dorsal fin small, 11, its origin nearer tail fin base than pectoral base; anal fin long, 52-65 rays, origin much nearer tip of snout than base of tail fin; pelvic fins absent; belly with a sharp keel of ~ 29 large spiny scales (scutes); ~ 45-60 lateral scales.

Color flank with a bright silver stripe.

Size: 17.5 cm.

Habitat: marine, coastal.

Depth: 0-10 m?

Southern Mexico to southern Ecuador.
