Habitat: In Iowa, F. knighti occurs in dry mesic (little-bluestem dominated) prairie; in Massachusetts, insandy pine barrens.

Natural History: In prairie, such as at the Iowa locality, F. knighti builds a small thatch nest against, or nestled within, little bluestem or other clumping vegetation. Feeding and daily rhythms are presumed to be like those of other species in this group. Queens are microgynous, indicating temporary social parasitism.
