Prefers the surge zone of unprotected rocky headlands with steep slopes. It wedges itself in crevices close to shore in shallow water, darting out to defend its territory. Diurnal feeder that grazes on algae and sessile invertebrates, using its comb-like incisor teeth to scrape food (Ref. 28023). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205).
