Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 0 - 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12 - 18; Anal spines: 0 - 0; Anal soft rays: 16 - 27. Pre- and post-pelvic scutes lacking (pelvic scute present, tips of its lateral arms bifurcated). Jaws about equal, with fine teeth; no second supra-maxilla; branchiostegal rays 3 or 4. Scales large. Occurs with other pellonulines, but the smoothly rounded belly, absence of spiny post-pelvic scutes and lack of a second supra-maxilla makes it unmistakable.
