Adults inhabit slow-flowing or still, muddy waters (Ref. 9696, 44894). Abundant in rivers, lakes, canals and reservoirs; brackish water populations in the Baltic and the Black Sea are anadromous (Ref. 556, 44894). Can thrive in poor quality, even polluted water (Ref. 9988). Omnivorous, feed on insects, crustaceans, mollusks, and plants. Adults prefer to feed on plants (Ref. 30578, 44894). Pale yellow eggs are found attached to vegetation and tree roots (Ref. 41678). Larvae are demersal. There is only little commercial fishing for this species, but valued for recreational fishing. Utilized fresh and dried or salted; can be pan-fried, broiled and baked (Ref. 9988).
