Michаel Frаnkis commented on an older version of Distribution:

I don't think it's confusing it with Leucophaeus atricilla - it is just being parochial, and only mentioning the 0.0001% of the species' range that matters to the Great God North America, the Only Part of the World That Exists (in their viewpoint!). It is correct that Chroicocephalus ridibundus does occur as a scarce winter visitor in the area mentioned; the problem lies in their failure to acknowledge that the rest of the world exists ;-)

Michаel Frаnkis commented on "File:Accipiter erythronemius Horto Florestal de Sao Paulo, Brazil 2-crop.jpg":

@gardnie07: Accipiter erythronemius was formerly treated as a subspecies of Accipiter striatus by some authorities, that's why its images also crop up on the Accipiter striatus page.

I agree it would be nice if admins could have some way of permanently disassociating long-outdated taxonomies, as they frequently result in cases like this that appear odd to modern readers.

@ Yan - I've noticed before that updates to either images or their accompanying text at Commons don't seem to be taken up on harvest re-runs. The only exceptions where it is updated here is if either the file name or the category has also changed at Commons.

Michаel Frаnkis commented on "Ailurus fulgens":

Sorry, I have to disagree there. First, the animal is not in its natural surrounds, it is in a habitat it wouldn't be seen dead in, let alone alive. Second, and more important, it is of unknown provenance. Ailurus is currently treated as a single species with two allopatric subspecies; should future research conclude that it should be divided into two (or more) taxa at species rank (a very possible scenario, that has occurred with numerous other species recently), then these zoo images become (because of their unknown provenance) untrustable, unidentifiable Ailurus species: in effect, worthless. A wild specimen with location is however identifiable by its location, and therefore, valuable.

@Rob Mutch: Hi Rob - photographically a good pic, but I don't think it's a good idea to have plastic zoo junk without source data (or subspecies information) and out of natural habitat set as an exemplar, when we do have some photos of natural specimens in the wild with locations; these are of infinitely higher scientific value ;-)

@Luc Baudouin: It's easier to go to the Wiki Commons source page, and change the category at the bottom of the page from 'Cocos nucifera' to 'Elaeis guineensis' - then the error is corrected automatically at the next harvest of Commons. I've done it now ;-)

Michаel Frаnkis commented on an older version of File:Dipsacus fullonum comb.jpg:

It was wrongly categorised as "D. sativus" at Commons, so appeared on that page here as well. I've recategorised it so it'll disappear from there at the next Commons harvest. Though the entire Commons "D. sativus" category needs reclassifying, as it's only a subspecies (if that - cultivar group is probably better) of D. fullonum.

Michаel Frаnkis commented on "Conservation Status":

Not relevant here: Conservation Status is decided solely on the basis of natural populations; the presence – or removal – of non-native exotic populations doesn't affect the Conservation Status.

Pretty rubbishy stuff from wikipedia there; it also needs to be updated to remove all that archaic 17th century imperialist cr@p in the measurements, as well as more accurate information.
