Image of Leucopis

Description:

Description: Leucopis sp. Rock Creek Park, Washington, DC, USA. This little fly hung around a bunch of aphids tended by ants. It looked like it was licking honey dew from the aphids. The larvae are predators of plant-parasitic Hemiptera. I think Leucopis argenticollis and L. piniperda. are the only Leucopis species in the eastern U.S. They were introduced here to control hemlock woolly adelgid: www.srs.fs.usda.gov/compass/2015/05/27/bad-news-for-the-h.. www.uvm.edu/~uvmpr/?Page=news&storyID=21026.
