Least Chipmunk on Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge (29073556630)

Image of Least Chipmunk

Description:

Description: Least chipmunks do not hibernate, or put on excess fat in the fall. Instead, they survive the winter by entering torpor for long stretches of time, waking to eat food cached in the burrow. This least chipmunk was packing its cheeks with rubber rabbitbrush flowers, leaving for a few minutes, and then repeating. It is likely beginning to stock the larder for this winter.
