Description:

Description: English: PLATE 42 Diaporthe phaseolorum: A. — A leaflet of Phaseolus lunatus L. , showing a number of ragged holes of various sizes caused by the Lima bean podblight fungus. This specimen was collected at Cape May, N. J., August 5, 1915. The disease was produced on pods by inoculation with the organism (601) isolated from this leaf. Natural size. B. — A green Lima bean pod photographed 10 days after inoculation with the ascospore strain. Pycnidia are abundantly formed over an area about y 2 inch in diameter; outside of this is another somewhat darkened area which has already been invaded by the fungus, but the pycnidia have not yet broken through the epidermis. Natural size. C. — A pod showing the characteristic manner in which the fungus rapidly overruns it soon after it is killed, pycnidia forming indiscriminately over the entire surface. Natural size. Date: 1917.
