Leafy Liverwort - Bazzania trilobata

Image of greater whipwort

Description:

Got an ID on this little creeper - Bazzania trilobata. You can tell it is a leafy liverwort based on shape, branching patterns, and "leaf" arrangements and lack of vascular tissue. Found these growing on trees and rocks along the Duggar's Creek Falls trail (Linville Falls area) just off the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. Turns out the graduate students at the Herbarium at Appalachian State University had a specimen collected at Grayson Highlands State Park to confirm the ID on this one.
