Rhoicosphenia abbreviata is a tiny araphid diatom living attached on substratum by a jelly stalk. The substratum here is the red alga Polysiphonia fibrillosa. The other epibionts are Cocconeis and a filamentous colony of the cyanobacteria Pseudanabaena. Scale bar indicates 10 m.Collected from Bodden, the brackish waters lying between the isles of Hiddensee and Ruegen (German Baltic Sea).
