Kawau in Breeding Plumage

Image of Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis (Staunton 1796)

Description:

The Japanese Kawa-U (the Eurasian or Continental Great Cormorant) in breeding plumage at New Year's. Photo taken at the Kashio River, Yokohama, Japan. Update on Taxonomy: "Great Cormorant" refers to a number of species and subspecies. This one, since this is Japan, and since he has the yellow and white coloration at the base of the bill, is most probably P. c. sinensis. Machine tag is thus updated.
