Spirochaetes are motile bacteria. They have very fine flagella attached to the cell surface, and the rotating action of these propel spirochaetes through the medium. Spirochaetes have a spiral body and twist through the medium. These are from the termite Incisitermes. They have got trapped in a bend of a length of a trachea from their host flagellate. The spirochaetes move by turning, and in this case all of the spirochaetes were imaged while moving synchronously. Small Tricercomitus cells are attached to the top of the tracheae. Phase contrast.

Gallionella (gally-on-elle-a) one of the iron bacteria, the bacteria attach to surfaces and grow producing a mucus sheath which acquires metal salts as it ages. The bacteria live in a fine tube in the centre of the filament. Phase contrast.

Anacystis (a-na-cyst-is) is a cyanobacterium in which globular cells are located within a gelatinous matrix. Some of the cyanobacteria with this form can be toxic. Differential interference contrast.

Spirochaetes have a spiral body and twist through the medium. These are from the termite Incisitermes. Many flagellates that are endobiotic in termites have bacteria attached to the outside. In many cases these are spirochaetes. They move actively and this can produce the propulsive force for the the eukaryote flagellate. Phase contrast.

Anacystis (a-na-cyst-is), a cyanobacterium or blue green algae, in which the cells are clumped together within a mucus material. The clusters have to be compressed so that the individual cells can be observed. This genus adopts a variety of forms. Some Anacystis species are known to produce toxins. Phase contrast.

Flexibacter (fleck-see-back-ter) - a bacterium isolated from a marine sediment. Benthic ecosystems in marine and many other sediments is one which has a spectacular range of chemical conditions - from an oxic habitat at the surface to an anoxic, sulphide and acidic habitat in deeper regions. The oxygen rich layer penetrates deeper into sediments during the day or when sediments are exposed to the air (photosynthesis and access to the atmosphere provide a supply of oxygen), and at night or when the tide comes up the oxygen rich layer recedes. Most organisms seem to occur only in a narrow band within the habitats, and so must be able to move with the changing chemistry of the habitat changes. Many bacteria - such as the ones illustrated here - are filamentous and flexible and can migrate through the sediments. Phase contrast.

Gallionella, iron bacterium. The bacterium creates a filament which adheres to surfaces. Many filaments may form aggregates. The mucus secretions become brown, thicker and more brittle with age.
