It is native to Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Uganda, The Gambia, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Gabon, Cameroon, Kenya, Guinea, Burundi, Senegal, Rwanda, Togo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Niger, Liberia, the Central African Republic, South Africa, Guinea-Bissau, Benin, Angola, Chad, Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan. It is a solitary invertivore. Individuals are known to live for 8.4 years and can grow to 1686.7 g. Reproduction is dioecious.
