It is native to São Paulo, Mata Atlântica, Pernambuco, Paraná, Mato Grosso, Pampa, Amazônia, Caatinga, Rio Grande do Sul, Roraima, Distrito Federal, Ceará, Bahia, Santa Catarina, Sergipe, Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Espirito Santo, Amazônia, Piauí, Paraíba, Alagoas, Cerrado, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pantanal, Tocantins, and Minas Gerais. It is a photoautotroph.
