Brief Summary

provided by Ecomare
Red deer live in woods, overgrown fields with lots of bushes and on the edge of swamps. They eat leaves and twigs from trees and bushes and grass. Up till the Middle Ages, red deer lived along the Dutch coast, but they were annihilated by hunters. Since the end of the last century, they are commonly found in nature areas where they have been released to graze. They haven't yet been released into any of the Dutch dunes. On Terschelling, an unknown person made an attempt to populate the island with red deer, but the landowner, the State Forestry, had a different opinion. All of the animals were captured and the attempt failed.
