Perna perna (Mexilhao Mussel) is a species of mussels in the family Mytilidae. They are associated with freshwater habitat. They are native to Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka, Venezuela, mediterranean region, India, Uruguay, Mozambique, Madagascar, South Africa, and Brazil. Adult Mexilhao Mussel form marine reefs. Dead Mexilhao Mussel form shallow marine sediments. Individuals can grow to 387 mm. They have sexual reproduction. They are sessile animals.
