Cheek scaled to margin of preopercle; flap on anterior nostrils very long and rounded; pectoral fins reaching a line connecting origins of dorsal and pelvic fins. The irregular bars and spots on the body red, the centers of larger markings sometimes yellow. All fins with transverse red bands.

體圓而瘦長,呈長圓柱形,尾柄兩側具稜脊。頭較短。吻圓,吻長明顯大於眼徑。前鼻孔瓣長且圓。眼中等大;脂性眼瞼發達。口裂大,上頜骨末端遠延伸至眼後方;頜骨具銳利之小齒;腭骨前方齒較後方齒長,明顯自成一叢。體被圓鱗,頭後背部、鰓蓋和頰部皆被鱗;側線鱗數55-58;側線上鱗數3.5(少數為4.5)。單一背鰭,具軟條13-15(通常為14);有脂鰭;臀鰭與脂鰭相對,具軟條8-9(通常為8);胸鰭長,末端延伸至腹鰭起點與背鰭起點之連線;尾鰭叉形,上葉等長於下葉。體紅色,體側具不規則之深紅色帶和斑點,最大斑紋的中央有時為黃色;吻背上不具一對小而顯著的黑點;各鰭皆具斑點,並連成橫向斑紋。
棲地

主要棲息於沿近海靠近礁石之砂泥底質海域。屬肉食性,以小型魚類及甲殼類為主。通常在砂地上停滯不動,身上的花紋是很好的偽裝,有時會將整個身體埋入砂中而只露出眼睛,等候獵物游經時,躍起吞食。

The arrowtooth lizardfish (Synodus doaki) is a lizardfish of the family Synodontidae, found in isolate locations across the southwestern Pacific (namely Queensland, the Coral Sea, New Caledonia, Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island and the North Island), at depths of between 9 and 200 m. Its length is between 15 and 28 cm.
Published occurrences of Synodus doaki from the Hawaiian Islands, Indonesia, Philippines, Easter Island, and Fiji are now treated as the distinct species Synodus mundyi, S. fasciapelvicus, S. isolatus, S. pylei, and S. sanguineus.[2]
