Description

provided by Deep sea Fishes of the World LifeDesk

Escal appendage pattern B; esca with a stout anterior appendage as long as or slightly longer than escal bulb, bearing two, unpigmented, tapering filaments on anterior margin near distal tip, and numerous shorter filaments along anterior, posterior, and lateral margins, with distal tips of some darkly pigmented in specimens 78 mm and larger; proximal half of anterior escal appendage internally pigmented; a series of short, unpigmented filaments arranged along distal midline of escal bulb, usually three distinct groups, the posterior-most group paired; a truncated terminal escal papilla, with a distal streak of pigment in specimens 47 mm and larger; an unpigmented posterior escal appendage, approximately half length of escal bulb, most specimens bearing two to five short, unpigmented filaments near distal tip; an unpigmented, tapering, unbranched lateral escal appendage less than one-third length of escal bulb in specimens 47 mm and smaller, unbranched and nearly six times length of escal bulb in 78-mm specimen, and branched and nearly seven times length of escal bulb in 173-mm specimen; anterolateral escal appendages absent.

Subopercle without indentation on posterodorsal margin; length of ventral fork of opercle 24.9–29.6% SL; ratio of lengths of dorsal and ventral forks of opercle 0.44–0.60.

Epibranchial teeth absent; teeth present on pharyngobranchial II; total number of teeth in upper jaw 21–53, in lower jaw 26–54; number of teeth on vomer 5–8; dorsal-fin rays 6 or 7; anal-fin rays 4; pectoral-fin rays 15–19.

Measurements in percent of standard length: head length 38.2–43.6; head depth 38.5–42.9; premaxilla length 27.3–34.0; lower jaw length 43.2–50.6; illicial length 20.8–30.8.

Diagnostic Description

provided by Deep sea Fishes of the World LifeDesk

A species of Oneirodes distinguished from all other members of the genus in escal morphology. It is most similar to O. eschrichtii and O. bulbosus, but differs in having a well-developed lateral escal appendage.

Distribution

provided by Deep sea Fishes of the World LifeDesk

Oneirodes anisacanthus is wide spread in the North Atlantic, ranging from 65°N between Greenland and Iceland, south to Madeira (type locality) and the Gulf of Guinea and west to the Caribbean Sea. The 47-mm specimen was captured with a closing net between 900 and 1040 m. The remaining vertical distributional data are too few to allow reasonable conclusions.

Reproduction

provided by Deep sea Fishes of the World LifeDesk

Although unknown, males of O. anisacanthus are certainly free living and non-parasitic, as is the case with most oneirodid taxa.

The largest known female of O. anisacanthus (173 mm, MMF 3101, appears to be sexually mature; the right ovary is about 40 mm long (23.1% SL) and contains numerous eggs measuring approximately 0.08–0.10 mm in diameter.
