Round in cross section. Dorsal fin rays 12-15; anal fin rays 15-18. Caudal peduncle without lateral keels. Caudal fin rounded or truncate. Predorsal scales few and relatively large, 100-130. Caudal fin light with a prominent round black spot near its base. Dorsal fin lobe and distal margin of caudal fin yellow in live adults, anterior margin of anal fin orange.

Found in coastal areas and mangrove-lined lagoons, also enters freshwater (Ref. 4959). Occurs inshore (Ref. 75154). Inhabits coral reefs (Ref. 58534). Also found on intertidal mudflats (Ref. 122066) and sandy beaches (Ref. 122659).

Found in coastal areas and mangrove-lined lagoons, also enters freshwater. Carnivorous. Feeds mainly on small fishes, especially clupeoids. Occurs at temperatures ranging from 26 to 29°C (Ref. 4959). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs may be found attached to objects in the water by tendrils on the egg's surface (Ref. 205). Sold fresh in markets.

體略側扁,截面呈圓柱形,體高為體寬之1.4-1.9倍;頭部甚側扁,背側之中央溝發育良好;頭長小於鰓蓋後緣至腹鰭基底之間距;尾柄側扁,無側隆起稜。兩頜突出如喙,下頜長於上頜;具細齒,呈帶狀;無鋤骨齒;主上頜骨之下緣在嘴角處突出於眼前骨之下方。鰓耙缺如。鱗中等,鰓蓋具鱗,背鰭基底及臀鰭基底具鱗;背前鱗數100-130;側線低位,近腹緣,至尾柄處向上昇,而止於尾柄中部。背鰭與臀鰭對在,前者基底較短,背鰭起點在臀鰭第5-8軟條基底之上方,具軟條12-15,臀鰭軟條15-18;腹鰭基底位於眼前緣與尾鰭基底間距中央之略後方;尾鰭圓形。體背藍綠色,體側銀白色。尾鰭基底具一黑班。

Strongylura strongylura, the spottail needlefish or blackspot longtom, is a species of needlefish from the family Belonidae. It is found in the Indian and western Pacific Oceans from the Persian Gulf east to Australia and the Philippines.[2] This species occurs in coastal waters and in mangrove-lined lagoons as well as being recorded in estuarine areas and it has even entered freshwater. Living S. strongylura have been found alive and buried in mud during low tide.[1] It is piscivorous, feeding mainly on clupeoids. This species is oviparous and the eggs adhere to objects in the water which catch the tendrils which cover the surface of the egg.[2] Strongylura strongylura under the synonym of Strongylura caudimaculata is the type species of the genus Strongylura.[3] It as originally described as Belone strongylura by Johan Coenraad van Hasselt in 1823 with the type locality given as Vizagapatam, India.[4]
