Coachwhip Cardinal

Pinkish red in color, becoming stronger on head and anterior spines of dorsal, anal and pelvic fins; red spots along lateral line; edge of scales darker red; alternating red and silvery reflecting vertical bars may be found under lateral line; caudal spot small; dark stripe from tip of snout to eye (Ref. 4329).

Exhibits the black gut phenomenon. In nocturnal predators, it appears to serve to conceal bioluminiscent prey in the stomach cavity (Ref. 46685).
