They are native to Morocco, Western North America, Spain, Italy, Yugoslavia, France, Libya, Algeria, Portugal, Greece, and Tunisia. They have simple, broad leaves and achenes. Flowers are visited by Erynnis tristis, Halictus farinosus, Geminaria canalis, and Pontia protodice. Individuals can grow to 0.64 m.
