Viola are rich anti-oxidant compounds in the form of beta carotene and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).EtymologyThe generic name Viola is from Latin violet, the purplish-blue color of the flowers.The specific name, chamissoniana, honors Ludolf Karl Albert von Chamisso (1781-1838), French-born German explorer, naturalist, author, poet, and plant collector.

This uncommon shrubby Violet is unique to the Alakai region of Kauai, where it was here growing in native forest near the trail from Pihea to Alakai Crossing. It was in fruit but had one or more buds and this one flower. Image I12-0665, August 9th 2012.
