Amauropsis aureolutea (Strebel, 1908) (Figs 251, 266)

Natica aureolutea Strebel, 1908: 63, pl. 5, figs 63a, b.

Amauropsis aureolutea : Powell, 1951: 116; Carcelles, 1953: 186; Powell, 1960: 144.

MATERIAL EXAMINED: Eltanin Stns 410, 428, 437, 439, 612, 1079, 1082, 1084, 1535; USNM 613074, 63°00'S, 60°32'W, off South Shetlands, 25 m.

DISTRIBUTION: The known range for A. aureolutea is from South Georgia, through the South Orkneys, South Sandwich Islands and the South Shetlands to the northern extremity of the Antarctic Peninsula in 25-1120 m.

REMARKS: Powell (1951:116) noted that the largest specimen in the Discovery collections was 27 mm in height and 24 mm in diameter, while Strebel's holotype was 14.9 x 14.2 mm. The live-collected specimen from USNM 613074 is 28.8 x 26.1 mm. Powell (1951) figured and described a radula of A. aureolutea as having a bifid inner and a simple outer marginal. A specimen from Eltanin Stn 410 (Fig. 266) has a simple inner marginal. Arnaud (1972c: 125) considered that aureolutea was a synonym of Natica xantha Watson. Arnaud may have based his discussion on the figure given by Lamy (1911b: 23, fig. 1) of a supposed specimen of xantha from off South Georgia. As indicated under the discussion of Falsilunatia xantha below, examination of the holotype of xantha does not bear out this conclusion.”
