Perennial herb with 1-several stems growing from a woody rootstock. Stems often bluish-green, finely velvety when young. Leaves opposite, sessile or with a short petiole, up to 3 mm, ovate-elliptic-pandurate, with or without small basal sagittate lobes, up to 15 × 6 cm, bluish-green, finely velvety on both surfaces, cordate or auriculate and clasping the stem at the base; margin entire. Inflorescences in spikes, 3-21 cm long, with ovate, overlapping bracts, often covered with many small stalked glands. Corolla turquoise-green; tube 2-2.7 cm long, lower lip with 3 spreading lobes; mid-lobe largest, up to 15 × 8 mm; upper lip linear, 8-12 mm long, erect, bifid. Capsule 17-22 mm long, finely velvety.
