They are native to Western North America, North America, Eastern North America, United States, Canada, The Contiguous United States, Mata AtlâNtica, Santa Catarina, SãO Paulo, Bahia, Espirito Santo, Paraná, Ceará, GoiáS, Cerrado, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande Do Sul. They have simple, broad leaves and green flowers. Flowers are visited by Cryptophilus. Individuals can grow to 1.7 m. They have unisexual flowers.
