Perennial twining herb with annual stems, up to 1-2 m long, growing from a flattened tuberous rootstock. Milky sap present. Leaves opposite, heartshaped, up to c. 5 × 2.5 cm, cordate at the base, slightly fleshy, slightly hairy on both surfaces; petiole up to 1 cm. Flowers in few-many-flowered axillary inflorescences. Corolla tube c. 2 cm long, narrowing in the middle and bent at almost right angles, pale purplish, greenish on the widening upper third; lobes linear, 5-9 mm long, connecting at the tips to form a "cage", pale greenish with a dark purple mark at the base of the lobes; margins reflexed with long hair-like cilia. Fruit in 2 follicles, fusiform, up to 10 cm long.
