Cells solitary, approximately spherical, about 10 microns in diameter (7-15 microns). The single flagellum is about 17 microns long. The cell body covered with scales of one basic form. The oval, bowl-shaped scales measure 1.8-2.0 x 1.3-1.6 microns. Apart from a narrow, rather solid scale rim, the entire scale is composed of fibres which constitute a loose meshwork. Seen from the concave side of the scale, the fibres are arranged in a distinct pattern formed by three sets of interwoven fibres mostly crossing each other at an angle of about 60 degrees. When seen from the convex side of the scale, the fibres appear to be arranged in a somewhat less regular way. Numerous retractable slender cytoplasmic axopodia, with occasional refractile granules along their length, arise from the entire cell surface.
