It is native to Tanzania, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Togo, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, South America, Swaziland, Nigeria, Namibia, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Guinea, the Americas, the Central African Republic, Angola, Benin, Malawi, Liberia, Santa Catarina, Pará, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Amazônia, Mata Atlântica, Espirito Santo, Amazônia, Rio Grande do Norte, Goiás, Rondônia, Rio Grande do Sul, Minas Gerais, Maranhao, Pantanal, Cerrado, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Distrito Federal, and the Neotropics. It has broad leaves. It is a photoautotroph. Individuals can grow to 6 m. Reproduction is monoecious.
